2024-09-17 00:00:00Z Sep. 16, 2024 Brian Flaherty Why Membership Matters Sep. 17, 2024
Great Rotary clubs don’t happen by chance.  They’re a result of careful planning, thoughtful actions and dedicated efforts to ask for feedback, try new ideas and adapt.  When Rotary’s membership is strong, our clubs thrive, Rotary is better known, and our members have more opportunities to help communities flourish.

A District-wide 5150 Rotary Summit was recently held to engage members in a discussion about membership.  Attendees were reminded that as a membership organization nothing else matters than membership; our product is our service. We must recognize that attrition is real, and retention is a long-term goal. It takes Intentional Strategies for membership growth every year to sustain a healthy club.

Tales from a Wild Life
Sarah Killingsworth Tales from a Wild Life Oct. 01, 2024

Sarah will share photos from her adventures in wild places and stories from the field.  With an emphasis on native predators, Sarah’s photography highlights unique behavior and intimate portraits of species like wolves, bears, coyotes, bobcats, foxes and badgers.  Increasingly, as human development expands and traditional habitats shrink, many of these species are living in closer proximity to humans.  Sarah has spent years observing and documenting native predators in both suburban and wild environments and will share tales from the field as well as insights into how wildlife adapts to living in our midst.

Dick Spotswood The 2024 General Election Nov. 05, 2024

The status quo can change quickly. At the beginning of 2024, no political pundit could have predicted where we find ourselves today. It’s been a year full of twists and turns. We’ll take a closer look and see what’s happened on the national stage during the past ten months and why. Dick Spotswood will then examine the short-term and long-term implications for the nation and the world depending on who wins the presidency or which party controls the two Houses of Congress.

EU-US Transatlantic Relations: Stormy Seas or Smooth Sailing?
Andrew Standley EU-US Transatlantic Relations: Stormy Seas or Smooth Sailing? Dec. 03, 2024
EU-US relations – based on shared values, a common history and a free market economy – have been a bedrock of the post WWII international order. Within the NATO framework, Europe has depended on the US for its security, while successive US administrations have broadly supported the EU as a means of consolidating peace, stability and prosperity in Europe.

But the US’ geographic focus has increasingly shifted towards the Asia-Pacific region. Meanwhile, deep internal strains are appearing within the EU as a result of surging populism. Andrew Standley, former EU ambassador to Bolivia, Israel and Mexico, will examine the state of US-EU relations as well as the key challenges facing the EU, and identify areas where the transatlantic relationship may face headwinds.

Nuclear Security Risks in a New Administration
Andrew Reddie Nuclear Security Risks in a New Administration Jan. 07, 2025

This talk will examine the nuclear security landscape facing the new U.S. presidential administration, emphasizing key risks posed by Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran. We will explore how Russia’s aggressive nuclear posture and renewed deployment of strategic assets impact global stability, with particular attention to its implications for Europe and NATO. Shifts in China’s nuclear strategy, including rapid arsenal expansion and advancements in missile technology, add another layer of complexity, potentially destabilizing the Asia-Pacific region. North Korea’s persistent nuclear advancements and tests underscore its ambition to become a credible nuclear power, raising challenges for denuclearization diplomacy. Lastly, Iran’s nuclear program and uranium enrichment efforts, alongside regional tensions, present immediate proliferation concerns. The talk will address these evolving threats and consider strategies for the U.S. to engage diplomatically, mitigate escalation, and reinforce global nuclear norms in the face of a shifting security environment.
